A Career Coach: When & Why You Need One

Find me on:

A study from the University of Sydney’s workplace research centre says “The average working week in Australia among full time employees is 44 hours. And one in five Australians work more than 50 hours a week,”

Coach

Let’s face it; your job is a very important part of your life.

Money makes the world go round and we spend at least 40 years of our lives working. Being happy at work will have a flow on effect on the rest of your life and health, likewise with being unhappy so it’s important to put the effort in with your career and get professional help to get the right job. After all, we study, we do work experience, we gain years of experience. Why not get a career coach? Why do I need a career coach?

They are there for your interests only

Let's start at the beginning, with a simple and important question: What is a certified career coach?

A career coach is distinctly different from every other person you will come across in a job search or your career. Their only vested interest is in getting you the job you want at the best company for you, at the best salary for you. A recruiter is concerned with making you fit into the jobs that they have to fill to get their commission and anyone else giving you advice has the best of intentions but no where near the knowledge of your career or the market place that a career coach will have. Same with an internal company recruiter, they are going to be incredibly particular because the people they choose could soon be a work mate. A career coach will make sure you are suited to the roles you are applying for and give you excellent advice about the whole process.

They know the job market place

Career coaches are looking at the job market constantly. They know which industries are fast to hire and which are slow. They know the current practices with resumes and LinkedIn. You could Google how to write a resume and best LinkedIn profile practices and find a thousand different and contradictory pieces of advice. A career coach is in real time, has access to you and your current resume and is therefore going to have the best advice, specifically for you. They should also be in the country you are in and understand the industry you are looking for a job in.

They will boost you up when you are unsure

Even the best of friends and family will struggle to understand or be patient enough to listen to your job search woes and post interview de-briefs. Not a career coach. They will be hanging on every word and formulating your next steps. There is nothing like a career coach to set you up for success and have you feeling motivated and confident. After all, they deal with this journey every day and they have made it their career! They will be like that best friend that understands you like no one else does.

They are objective and can think straight when you can’t

When you are on your own, how do you tell if it’s your heart or your head making the decision? You might be passionate about something but if you are good at something you can get the same level of satisfaction making that your career. If you have an interest or a hobby sometimes it’s better left that way! Especially if how much you earn is important to you.
