Don’t wait for your employer to notice you

If you’re serious about moving up the ranks, you need to be your own personal cheerleader. Many employees wait for their employer to acknowledge them and offer them a promotion, which more often than not, only leads to stagnation in the workplace while you wait in vain for a nod of recognition. The only person responsible for your career development is you.

Identify the skills that will get you to your goal

If you know you want to own your own franchise, for example, but you’re hazy on how exactly you’re going to achieve this, you’re doomed from the start. To make sure your hard work is rewarded, pinpoint the skills and competencies that you need to strengthen or acquire. Once you’ve identified these, you can formulate a plan of action.

Be proactive

It’s up to you to put your career development plan into motion. Formulate a step-by-step plan that outlines exactly what you need to do on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Successful career development requires taking small, achievable steps towards your goal. Keep the momentum going and boost motivation by tracking your progress as you go.

Keep the finish line in mind

When the going gets tough, reflect on how you’ll feel when you get that promotion or start your own business. It’s easy to lose sight of the endgame if you’re not constantly reminding yourself of what you’re working towards. Write down a motivational quote or practice some positive self-talk when you need an extra dose of motivation.

Invest in acquiring the right knowledge

An online course can speed up your career advancement and give you a competitive edge over your peers. That said, you need to choose a course that will equip you with the skills specific to your career goals. Find an education provider who understands your industry, and who can provide you with practical experience as well as the theoretical understanding you require.
