Boost Earning Potential & Achieve Financial Goals | MCI Institute

Ready to reach financial goals and your career aim? Here are five ways you can begin to increase your earning potential, starting today:

Define your career goal

Whether it’s a promotion, a salary increase or an entirely new position, clearly define your aspirations. A vague “I want to earn more money” won’t cut it. Get clear about what you want to achieve, and try to condense this into one sentence: “I want to earn X by X time.”, or “I want to be in a managerial role by X time.” Write this down and save it somewhere visible.

  1. Take on more responsibility

If you want to earn more, you need to put in the effort. Communicate your interest in taking on additional work to management. This is an opportunity to actively demonstrate your skills and competence.

  1. Work backwards

Identify the skills or attributes you need to add to your resume to reach your career goals. If you’re unsure, speak to a career coach or read up on the job descriptions of similar roles. Then, plan out how you’re going to level up. If you’re looking to grow within your organisation, speak to a senior colleague who’s familiar with the job role you’ve got your eye on.

  1. Prioritise your future self

Forming new habits, and breaking old ones, is difficult. But if you want to move up a rung on the career ladder, you need to commit to spending time on the activities that will help you in the future, as opposed to gratifying your immediate wants and needs.

  1. Invest in further education

Binge-watching TED talks and subscribing to Forbes.com are great ways to bolster your skills, but if you want to ensure your efforts really pay off, it’s time to hit the books. Online business courses offer you a flexible way to earn a nationally-recognised and industry accredited qualification. You can learn when it’s convenient for you, and continue to work at the same time.
